Understanding leather.
The cleaning of leather is essential for keeping it looking good for longer. Many people forget leather is a hide, and just like our own skin it needs to be cleaned and receive moisture to stop it drying out and cracking.
Approximately 85% of leather upholstery sold in the UK is ‘pigmented’ leather.
Pigmented leather is any top grain leather to which a clear topcoat and colour/dye have been applied.
The colour/dye are what usually give the shiny even top color to the leather, the leather is coated with colour and then a shiny or matt finish is applied to seal the colour in.
Using the incorrect cleaning solutions or even baby wipes or scrubbing with a brush will take off the finish that is holding the colour/dye in place and fading or worse colour removal will happen.
